Congratulations LHS Cross Country Coach Brad Helsel School Year 2023-2024 State of North Carolina NFHS Cross Country Coach of the Year The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recently announced Brad Helsel was given the distinguished honor of being the cross country coach of the year for the state of North Carolina. Principal Dr. Todd Carver said, “This is a huge accomplishment for Coach Helsel, his achievements on and off the field are testament to his care for our students and his leadership here at LHS.” When acknowledged by his administrator, Coach Helsel expressed, “I hardly did anything alone. I’d like to recognize the contribution of my wife, Brenda Helsel, who was essential to coaching and managing the team last year. And, we couldn’t have accomplished anything without a great, supporting athletic director and track coach, Deb Bryant. A successful cross country
season always begins the previous spring with track. And of course we have great kids here at Lejeune. Brenda and I feel blessed to be able to coach them!” Senior runner Brandon said, “He, cares a lot about how the runners feel and tailors the daily workouts to their needs.
He is one of the most determined coaches. He researches. He plans ahead. He plays a game of chess and not checkers when it comes to developing seasoned runners for championship
races.” NFHS is a national organization that advocates for and leads high school athletics and performing arts programs. The NFHS's mission is to enhance the educational experience of high school students by providing leadership, coordination, and support for these activities. Coach Helsel will now move forward to be recognized on both the regional and national level.
