Drivers Education

The state of North Carolina requires anyone under the age of 18 to complete a driver education course consisting of at least 30 hours of classroom and a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, before they will be issued a driving permit. For the convenience of our students, we work with The North Carolina Driving School to host multiple classes in our building (outside of school hours) throughout the year. Please note these are not courses taken through LHS, so they are non-credit bearing and will not appear on a student’s transcript. To be eligible to register for a class session, you must be a Lejeune High School student and 14 1/2 years old by the first day of class. Driver’s education class dates will be advertised on the morning announcements, through the LHS website, the NC Driving school website and on the student services Google classroom when they are released. It is the student's responsibility to arrange transportation to/from the driver’s education class if it is held in person at LHS Some classes may be offered online through NC Driving School. All registration is done online through the NC Driving School. www.ncdrivingschool.com

NC Driving school will open the registration link 3 weeks before the class begins, and students are registered first come/first serve. There are no classes on Fridays or on days that LHS is out of school unless the class is online. If the course is online, then classes will be held even on days that LHS is not in session or is in early release. Students are expected to attend every class in their session to receive credit. Please be mindful that you may need to wait for a later session if you are in sports or another extra-curricular activity due to this state requirement. If you register for a class and realize that you are unable to attend the session, please let Ms. Campbell know ASAP so that she can ask NC Driving School to open your slot to another student.

Important Facts

  • This driver's education class is offered, and the dates are determined by the North Carolina Driving School (NCDS).
  • Enrollment in the class is on a first-come/first-serve basis. Priority for the driving portion of the course is by age. Students must be 14 1/2 at the time of the class to register.
  • Students must be eligible to attend Camp Lejeune Schools to attend the driver’s education class at Lejeune High School. Students who register will be required to provide documents to Lejeune High School that confirm eligibility before the 1st day of class to attend.
  • Course dates for Lejeune High School are posted on the North Carolina Driving School website as they are scheduled (www.ncdrivingschool.com), and advertised prior to offering in the weekly bulletin, on the LHS website, and in the morning announcements.
  • Transportation to and from Lejeune High School for Driver Education is the responsibility of the student/family.
  • If a student has a 504 or IEP in place, a release of information form must be completed for the driving instructor so that students will be able to receive accommodations for Driver Education.
  • 504/IEP students may receive accommodations but not modifications or services for the class.
  • Most students are scheduled for driving approximately 90 days from the classroom completion date. If it has been more than 90 days from completion of your class, please contact the NC Driving School to inquire. The driving portion will usually take 3-4 consecutive days.
  • Before a Driver's Eligibility Certificate is issued from the high school,  In accordance with North Carolina's Dropout Prevention and Adequate Progress Law that was passed on August 1, 1998, students must pass 70% of classes at all times in order to receive or maintain their permit and/or license.  If a student fails to meet the requirements by not staying on track to graduate (passing 6 of 8 classes; maintaining a 2.0 GPA), the Division of Motor Vehicles will be notified and the student's driving privileges will be revoked until the next semester.  The law was passed to help motivate and encourage better grades and high school completion.

A PARENT must bring the original Certificate of Completion provided to the student by the driving instructor to the appointment to receive a Drivers Eligibility Form from the LHS Coordinator. An appointment must be made to pick this up using this link: https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/DriversEligibilityCertificat…  Parents (only) will be issued a Driver's Eligibility Certificate to take to the DMV since their signature is required on the DEC.  As this certificate EXPIRES in 30 days, it is recommended that the certificate not be obtained until a permit test appointment is confirmed with the DMV.  If a new certificate is needed, please make a new appointment using the above link and bring the expired certificate to the Driver's Ed Coordinator.

If you have any problems, questions, or concerns please contact Ms. Campbell at (970) 775-8388. Here’s a quick checklist to get your permit:

  1. Take NC Driving School’s classroom portion of the course
  2. Have your eyes checked according to the instructions provided by the NC Driving School. Typically, this is done during class, but some students may have to follow-up with an optometrist if instructed or if they took the NC Driving School class online.
  3. The driving instructor will then call you to schedule your driving portion (approx 60-90 days from completion of the classroom portion). Once the driving portion is completed you will receive a completion certificate from your driving instructor.
  4. Make an appointment with the DMV to get your permit.
  5. Within 30 days of your DMV appointment, make an appointment at the link in my signature to get an eligibility certificate from me. Note these are only good for 30 days.
  6. Go to your DMV appointment to get your permit. Congrats!
  7. If you need to retest, make sure your eligibility certificate is still valid. If you need to return to the DMV to retest after 30 days, please use the appointment link to pick-up a new certificate.
